When The Saints by Sarah Mian

This book is hilarious!!  A sad story of a young women who reunites with her disfunctional family.  This tale comes with a twist of wit told by the main character Tabitha Saint.  The author Sarah Mian is a genius at storytelling. A satisfying quick read, I couldn’t put in down.

Wicked weekend

Saturday, we traveled to Mahone Bay and Lunenburg to have lunch and shop around.  We had lunch at Rebecca’s.  The chef is very talented.  Take a look.

Found a pretty dress at Luvly in Lunenburg.  Canadian made.  I love when the tag says Made in Canada!

Yesterday at Have A Yarn in Mahone Bay I found some new projects:

Wirbel Shawl by Sue Berg:

Today I had a lace knitting workshop at The Loop in Halifax.

This yarn I will use to make the Wirbel Shawl by Sue Berg.  A one skein project!

So…..

We loved the Addams Family Musical!  It was full of sly humor and terrific dance numbers.  I’m always amazed by the costuming, make up and stage effects.  Sometimes I pay more attention to those details than the actual story.  It’s a delicious buffet for my senses.  I remembered my high school musical days down in the “pit”, playing music for Brigadoon.  The cast and crew did a marvellous job.

We have such talent here in Nova Scotia.  I wish our government could see the wealth in funding our cultural endeavours.  Art and culture is what makes us human.

Intolerable by  Kamal Al-Solaylee

The Canada Reads showdown is starting soon, here is another review, my obvious favorite so far.

It was refreshing to be invited along on a journey through a life instead of being an audience to a lecture on life.  Through the authors eyes a gay male in a increasingly strict religious society I was witness to this societal change of ideal and how devastating it can be to a persons identity, permanently scarring the soul.  The author who’s facing his own challenges, being gay and finding where he fits in the world is a perfect narrator of this story.  A story that needs to be told from a person seen as an outsider of his own culture, he knows how the rest of his adopted Canadian culture sees the conflicts and he expresses this throughout the novel, as he distances himself from his family whose ideologies are changing and are becoming foreign to him.  This story can be applied to many cultures and times through history when the young have moved away from home or homeland to set up a new life elsewhere either because of conflict or change of view.    If we look into the past of our own country or family, this idea is repeated over and over.  We can see it in the aboriginal history in Canada, and the immigrant experience.  Thank you Kamal Al-Solaylee.

Chris Hadfield

My husband and I were lucky enough to get tickets to see Chris Hadfield our Canadian Astronaut. He spoke of his life and experiences. It was truly inspiring and life affirming really. His simple philosophy is to always have a goal and work towards it everyday. Your goals may change but it keeps you moving forward. He showed us dreams can come true. He made me proud to be a Canadian.
